What a way to start a year!  Golden Square a winner. Now Bold Diva does a remarkable double!
Local Triumph.  How's this for a local win.  The horse was bred at Throckmorton Stud, the filly is trained at Cropthorne, and the owners live at Deerhurst.  The yard is very pleased for owner Ann Izamis and her family.  Having a winner is always something special but twice in such a short space of time, five days,  makes it extra special.   So well done the Izamis family & Tony!

A foot note.  This is what the Racing Post had to say about the horses last performance.

"Certainly BOLD DIVA is an improved performer this season and she defied a 6lb penalty for her Kempton success five days earlier in fair style, leading over 1f out and holding on well.
She is likely to come in for some punishment by the handicapper now but there could well be better still to come from her, and she will have every chance of completing a hat-trick in a fillies' handicap at Kempton later this month, her reported next target."

What happend to 2007 news?  It's still there but I have given it its own page.  Just click the rather  obvious '2007 News' button at the top of this page.

This way the page should download faster, and if the rest of the year is like the start I shall I have a lot to report so please check back regularly.
January 2008
Things are getting off to a good start this year (touch wood, plastic, glass, the local butcher and anything else that may avert bad vibes).

So far we have had Bold Diva deliver 2 wins and second. Mujamead same again 2 wins and a second, Golden Square a win,  Jessica Wigmo another win. I shall not bore you with the full stats, they are on the office page anyway.  But so far this year , that's right just in January, we have had 6 wins, 11
2nd's, 4 3rd's

So lets hope this keeps up (the butcher is apparently looking forward to it too)

I should have waited to the actual end of January shouldn't I ?  Harbour Blues romped home to the delight of the owners and the stable yesterday.    To quote the Racing Post  Harbour Blues......"won convincingly from the front.........".    So that is 7 winners so far in January.

February  2008
On browsing the web I came across this short article.

"20 January 2008
THE GREAT SHAKES!
WE'VE GOT A BEAUTY AMONG THE BEASTS IN THE TASTIEST SUNDAY RACING SERVICE 'Milk' maid Kirsty was born to win
Larry Lynx Racing Special
"She could ride a clothes horse and still win," blurted the course commentator when calling home Bold Diva at Southwell last Monday.
The young lady he was referring to is the amazing Kirsty Milczarek, who just cannot stop winning on the all-weather tracks. "

Obviously Tony's faith in this Jockey has been rewarded. It is nice to see someone doing so well.
My thanks to Sue Lunn, of William Hills, who came across this comment on the web :-

"
Prettilini is from a shrewd yard and is worth a look........"

If anyone else comes across an interesting quote please let me know.
Mujamead does it again!  Three times out, Three times a winner.  Doesn't get much better.

Here is what the Racing post had to say about his latest win at Southwell.

"There was no doubting the current wellbeing of MUJAMEAD going into this race and the dual Wolverhampton winner duly completed a hat-trick with a gritty effort. "
Another Two wins at Kempton on Sunday 10th Feb, here is what the Racing Post had to say about Chatshows Race.

"A competitive looking sprint handicap featuring four course-and-distance winners, as well as another couple who had gone well round here previously.
Added to that, plenty of these arrived in good form with half of the 12 having won or made the frame on their previous starts, so full credit goes to the tough CHATSHOW, who came out on top having been given a well-judged ride. He could be seen travelling well in behind the leaders when they straightened up, and made headway up the rails before leading near the line. He got the breaks but deserved to win after a string of consistent efforts. He could head back here again this week."

Then, less than an hour later at Kempton Under Fire wins. A double for the stable on one day.  This is what the Racing Post had to say about Under Fire

"UNDER FIRE, who arrived in rude health and was a deserved winner.
He has gone close without getting his head in front, but this drop back in trip worked. Depending on how he comes out of this, he could return later in the week where he holds entries over both this trip and 1m3f."

Also deserving a mention is a new horse in the yard.  Caliban.  I watched him at the gallops this week and he did look in fine form, but then again I am no expert.  Personally I did not think he deserved the 40/1 odds, pity I did not back the thought up with some cash!   The horse ran a fine race who would have thought he had been off for almost a year? Coming in a very close second.  Racing Posts comments ~

"Caliban set out to makeall and, although one of the first to come off the bridle, he kept finding and managed to shake off everything bar the winner. This was his first outing for 343 days, but, like the winner, he has returned in great heart for a new yard, and he must be capable of winning a similar handicap hurdle before long."

Its now six wins in February, so far, not to mention quite a few 'almosts'.

For those of you who like stats it works out at 19.35% win rate and 41.94% place rate over the last 7 days.  Currently Tony Carroll is in the Top Three  Trainer (flat)  list. Currently less than1%, or two wins, off the top spot.
(Source Ladbrooks 14.2)

Under Fire ran an excellent race real on the edge of your seat stuff.   Watching the race last night was very exciting, if you don't believe me just ask my neighbours and our dog.  Ridden by the Stable Jockey Mark Coumbe Under Fire led from the start and held on with a few close calls right until the end. RP had this to say "
A cracking performance from UNDER FIRE and jockey Mark Coumbe, who appeared to set good fractions  - before staying on gamely up the straight to repel all challengers and draw away again in the final 50 yards....... this looked a slightly stronger race, so he probably improved again.  His jockey thinks he has got the speed to win back at 7f and he is very much going the right way now."
We must not forget this is Under Fire's second win in February.

Then of course there was Nautical.  Who won at Wolverhampton. The reception back at the yard after his win would have done a Grand National winner proud.

Last, but by no means least, is Mokum.  RP said "
he usually goes well here and he proved suited by the strong pace set by Lulumar as he was produced in the home straight and was always going to win from three out.......................ridden as he was here, the trip posed no problems to him.Well done Mokum!

Editors Note.  One must also appreciate the efforts of the yard staff.  Actually heard singing on the gallops, apart from that they seem in good spirits.

Yet another win for the yard with Jessica Wigmo and stable Jockey Mark Coumbe at
Kempton yesterday.  RP Comments "
JESSICA WIGMO was lining up here off a 2lb higher mark than when winning at Lingfield two starts ago, and she made amends for an unlucky last outing, when she was pushed out wide, to get up late on. She will be kept busy now and could make a quick return either here or at Lingfield. If she remains in this sort of form, she could well go close again. "

That brings it up to 13 Wins in February, as of today Tony is just 1 win off getting to the  top of the Flat trainer list (source Ladbrooks 9am 21/2/08)  With more runners today lets keep our fingers crossed!

Mokum had another win yesterday, 16:40 at Sandown.  This is his second win this year. Does anyone else see a pattern developing in the yard?  I was hoping to put up a video of Mokum winning yesterday but alas I cannot find one.  However I did find one of him running eight days before. Same Jockey. Same result. Click here to jump to the video.

Arctic Wings ran at Newbury at the weekend and, much to the annoyance of the bookies,  won.  RP:  " ARCTIC WINGS had been soundly beaten on his hurdles debut but managed to turn that form right around as he battled on well once getting to the front. Time may tell that he handled the underfoot conditions better than the others on this occasion........."

I was down at Newbury myself and it was a delight to see the win.

As a footnote I came across this in Newbury town center, nothing to do with horse racing but I thought you might enjoy it anyway!
10th.
Tony’s  persistence has paid off again. Arthurs Dream ran a terrific, well planned race at Taunton today.  Letting others take the lead and burn themselves out at the start then three hurdles from the finish changing gear.  By the time he got to the last hurdle he was ten lengths in front and "absolutely tanking along",was the quote from At the Races commentator,  by the time he crossed the finish line he was fifteen lengths in front. A terrific win.

Racing post said "
ARTHURS DREAM, a winner in quick ground showed his liking for testing conditions when running respectably in one of these last time. He was held up as they went a steady pace early on, and after taking it up three out, he won this easily."
A happy owner & Arctic Wings at Newbury

Another exciting race last night at Kempton.  The race started and the first things you notice is the rain pouring down and our horse,  Jake The Snake, sitting at the back.  But as any 'expert' will tell you its not how you start in racing but how you finish that counts.  Coming around the last bend Kirsty 'Milkshake' Milczarek was still in last position. She had no way through the crowd of horses in front of her so she  came around the outside. Changed gear. Then stormed away to the front to win.  Even the race comentator remarked how good both the horse and rider were. The Racing Post said this morning "Diriculous then looked certain to collect once in front but the long-absent JAKE THE SNAKE found another gear inside the final furlong to win going way. Backed in from an early 14-1, he has a lot of talent "

Sue Lunn, one of the followers of the stables and this website found this quote for us on Ladbrooks webpage  "whilst Elegant Step represents a shrewd yard and therefore is one to keep an eye on in the betting as he steps back up in trip."

7th.
A pretty smooth race from Jessica Wigmo and Stable Jockey Mark Coumbe on Saturday last at Kempton. Everything seemed to gel nicely.  Mark took advantage of the gaps when they appeared and horse and rider moved as one, bringing home a convincing win.   Jessica Wigmo has won four races now, three of them at Kempton and each time with Mark on her back.  Definately a winning combination.  The Racing Post said of the race "...... a nice performance from JESSICA WIGMO, who landed her third course win in pretty ready fashion. She’s the type who needs things to drop right as she waits for the gaps to open but things panned out smoothly for her here as she switched out from the inside to lead over a furlong out and win without her rider having to get overly serious. She can be forgiven her latest defeat as she stumbled early in the contest and she’s proving pretty reliable for Tony Carroll on the all-weather this winter. She can continue to pay her way"

The other star of the day was Red Rudy, ridden by Seb Sanders, again at Kempton. Red Rudy did not exactly leave the starting stalls with elegance and had a lot of work to do to catch up. At the start you would have got wonderful odds against her winning but a combination of a well trained horse and a determined Jockey proved too much for the competition and Red Rudy romped home with a convincing win.  The RP reported "
A quickfire double for Seb Sanders, but the manner of victory was slightly different to the opening contest, as RED RUDY, who likes to be held up off a decent pace, was awkward leaving the stalls where he lost a bit of ground.
It helped him that the early pace wasn’t strong and he was soon very much in touch but he was taking a keen enough hold. Still, he moved through to have the leader in his sights early in the straight where Sanders looked pretty confident and the six-year-old quickened up to lead in the final furlong and keep on for a deserved victory. He’ll be seen to even better effect in a strongly run race around here but Tony Carroll reported that he’s not the easiest horse to keep sound."

A pretty exciting day over at Chepstow today.  First of all Ermine Grey with Kirsty 'Milkshake' Milczarek was pretty much boxed in at the start and the only chance was to go wide.  But Kirsty took the gamble and went to the outside of the pack. The gamble paid off and Ermine Grey stormed home to a fine win.  A close win but a win non the less. This is what the Racing Post had to say

"
ERMINE GREY had not won since scoring at Haydock in July of last year, but his trainer felt he appreciated the return to turf having failed to win during a busy spell on the sand lately.  Having chased the pace early, he was produced with his challenge widest of all, more towards the middle ofthe track, and ran on strongly."

An hour later Kirsty once again took to the saddle with another of the yards horses, Unlimited.  This race was strongly contested and Kirsty had to do some real hard riding. She fought for postition all the way to the line, but it paid off in the end as she rode home to win. A double for Kirsty and a double for the yard. A fine result. The RP comment :- "
UNLIMITED was the subject of a heavy late gamblewhich dropped his price from 12-1 into favourite, and the bets were duly landed, although things were not that straightforward. Returning from a short break following a spell on the all-weather, he was very keen under early restraint before coming outof the pack in pursuit of the runner-up inside the final quarter mile. Kirsty Milczarek had to get pretty serious to get on top but in the end they were well in command."

Photo's will follow as soon as I have them.  I have put the photo into the Photo section.

Harbour Blues at Haydock.   What a race!  Catherine Gannon rode a superb race.  Really running straight, superb rhythm with the horse.  A real joy to watch.  That is not just my opinion but the race commentators too.  Each footfall was challenged. Each inch was hard fought for and even when the first two had crossed the line it was hard to say who had won. But all were in agreement that Harbour Blues deserved to win.  Had Harbour won? Nail biting time waiting for the photo.  Even then it was not 100% clear if he had pulled it off.  But Cathy & Harbour had done it!  The race finished so close that if Harbour Blues had had a shave that morning he would  have lost it!

The Racing UK commentators said how much the horse had improved since moving to Tony Carroll's yard and how Tony works very quietly and if the spark is  there Tony will find it.  "Nibbling away bringing home the winners" was one such remark.
The old saying is 'horses for courses'  has Aldirous found his?  Could it be Uttoxeter?
Aldrious hardly got a mention in the racing commentary until they rounded the final bend as he was stuck at the rear of the pack, a wall of horse's in front. The jockey, C M Studd, took a chance and went wide of the pack.  At  three hurdles from home three horses jumped together but by one from home it was a two horse race between Madam Blaze and Aldirous. Aldirous found that little bit extra and as the others slackened pace he charged home to finish by a good clear length.  A good win for Jockey and horse and a wise course choice by Tony.

The Racing Post made the following comments.
"
This looked wide-open and there were still plenty in with chances turning for home, but from two out it developed into a duel between ALDIROUS and Madam Blaze, with the former asserting on the run-in to win readily in the end.
Aldirous had not wona race for two years and had been virtually pulled up at Fontwell last week on his first run since December, but trainer Tony Carroll explained that his horse was much better suited by this track than the tight Fontwell circuit and he expects the horse to go on to have a successful summer."

First of all may I say sorry that I have not posted for allmost a month.  Things have been a little hectic.  But hoping to catch up now!

At least once a week I visit the stables and over the past week or so visitors may have noticed a lot of empty stables.  Allmost all the horses have been let loose into the individual paddocks to catch a little sun on their backs.  Its a real pleasure to see those fit horses with gleaming coats springing around like lambs or rolling in the lush green grass. Summer is such a delight after all those rainy months.

Whilst the stables have been vacant the staff have been busy repainting and cleaning everything, so it's not just the horses that are starting to gleam.

Titfer running at Warwick.   This is the sort of race the hanicappers love.  It means the system they use, sometimes, works.  It was a fairly 'bunched up' race with all the horses in a block approaching the finish.  Each from a hundred yards out looked they they could win. But Titfer and his jockey found that little bit extra nosed in front to win.  This is what the racing post had to say.
"
Some unexposed inexperienced three-year-olds, but a truly bunched finish (ten spread across the track covered by no more than three lengths into the final 100 yards, suggests the form is moderate, backed up by the maiden Titfer prevailing.
This was a big change for TITFER, who has been running over further on soft ground, so no surprise he raced prominently here and just outstayed his rivals, one of four to come widest up the straight with all four edging right under pressure."

25th
Lordship running at Carlisle.  Just finished watching Lordship Run. The jockey B McHugh rode a great race and deserves a mention.  Leaving the stalls it looked like both had a lot of work to do. They were sitting second from last. But after a furlong or so one could spot the stratergy the jockey was using.  Rather than just follow the pack, the easy choice, the jockey appeared to take a definate line around the course and was soon gaining places whilst seemingly not quickening the pace too much. Taking advantage of the gaps as they appeared. By the last furlong Lordship had come from back to front and was only just beaten in to second place. Lordship & McHugh are the combination to look out for in future, especially on soft ground.

What a race yesterday at Chepstow.  I was there and the race reflected the weather.  Did not look promising but turned out nice in the end.   Ermine Grey was slow out of the gates and as a result was well behind the pack, heads were seen shaking slowly in the weighing room where I watched the race. The pair were not just behind, but well behind.  Three furlongs from home Ermine Grey, Kirsty Milczarek ('Milkshake') on his back, was still at the rear of the pack.   Coming up to two furlongs Kirsty steered Ermine to the outside and changed gear.  At this point no one would have put money on them.  Ermine in those last few lengths went from there to  attack the  front runners.  I think everyone was so surprised, including me. Then the race was stretched to the last few inches and somehow Ermine & Kirsty won.  It almost felt like the horse gave the others a 20 yard start then won just to show the other horses up.  So well done Ermine Grey, well done Kirsty.
Pround owners of Ermine Grey.
The racing post comments:-  "The feature on the card and this handicap went to ERMINE GREY, who seemingly had plenty on his plate after stumbling slightly as the stalls opened. However, he showed plenty of tenacity to get up and win but surely owes more to him being thoroughly honest but the runner-up not looking that enthusiastic about a battle."

A little update for you.  First of all the facilities, the lower gallops have been significantly improved by the addtion of several furlongs of all weather track to increase the training range.  This has proved very useful because, as I am sure you have noticed, this summer has not been exactly bright and sunny.  Training will not be restricted due to bad ground conditions now.  Something a lot of trainers will envy.

Remember in an earlier report I told you about Ermin Grey just stealing the win on the line having just come up from the rear of the pack?  Perhaps  some may have thought I was exagerating so just take a look at the photo below, close?  Ermine is,  obviously, the grey!
Tony being interviewed at Chepstow by 'At The Races' television crew.
New section of all weather tracking going off into the distance, then bends right for the same distance again.
My thanks to the Racing Advertiser for the photo's.

Just watched a set of very wet and soggy races from Worcester. My how it rained but it was worth getting wet just to see Sarobar running.  I have liked this friendly horse since it first arrived at Millhouse and watched it run with anticipation.  It did not let us down. Running on the far side of the track Lee Edwards held back in third position. The horse was jumping with confidence and they rode at a steady pace. At the fourth jump from home Sarobar and Lee jumped really well and put Sorabor into a clear lead almost straight away.  Quickly the gap  lengthened  from one to four lengths, then the horse actually picked up speed.  By the time the horse crossed the line Lee almost had time to pop home for a cup of tea whilst he waited for the rest to come in. He was some 14 lengths clear of the horse that came second, that is some win.
Part of Racing posts comment : "
SAROBAR had run well over course and distance last time and went one better with a bit in hand, but the ease of the success is probably down to the ground ......"

Well Friday saw Grey Boy giving his all in a great race.  He ran really well all the way round and brought home a great win by storming down the center of the track to win by some 4 1/2 lengths. It was a lovely run and its nice to see the horse running to form. Racing Post said : "
GREY BOY couldn't have got the job done more emphatically, storming clear down the middle of the track."
Improvement work has been continuing at the yard too.   The planting we did over spring is paying off with lots of colourful displays brightening the stables and making an even more pleasant working environment.   The main car park has been re-organised, expanded and re-surfaced. Not very exciting news but very practical.  Making life a little easier for owners and our other visitors.

Rain seems to play a part in the yards fortunes.  I arrived at Stratford Racecourse yesterday and it started to lightly drizzle, could this be another Worcester?

Pips Assertive Way (PAW) was very quiet both in the parade and the pre-parade ring.  The groom, Katie, walking her quietly and I almost wondered if she was going to sleep. But once PAW had Mattie Bachelor on her back she seemed to recognize him, knew she was on her favourite racecourse and did what she did best. She led almost all the way around.  Over the last hurdle she lost just a little ground and the horse pushing her took the lead away from her, just for a few seconds. PAW was having none of
it. She found that bit extra from somewhere and got the lead back and won!  The photo you see above was literally a horse's length from the finish line yet Pips Assertive Way won by 3/4 of a length.  How's that for turn of speed?

The good news does not end there.  Is It Me ran two races later.  Again Is It Me led most of the way and coming around the final bend it was almost a two horse race, the rest of the pack being left well behind. I think the horse heard the owner, who was stood next to me, then put in that bit extra and won by the briefest of margins. But a win is a win and the horse certainly eared it. A brave effort.  Well done Is It me!  This is what the racing post has to say :
The front two came well clear of their rivals in this handicap after they gave IS IT ME a soft lead and he managed to win for the first time in two years. He has struggled to find the form that saw him score five times as a juvenile in the meantime and the fact that he had his own way up front here obviously helped. As he is certain to go up for this, connections are eyeing going over fences and though he is not that big he is very courageous, that might suit him especially at this time of year.

This, of course, means Tony Carroll had a double!  No wonder Tony had the twinkle back in his eye that day. What a way to start a month.
On Wednesday night there was a particularly bad accident at Kempton Racecourse. Through no fault of his own his horse and four others were brought down. I have no more information that that of the Racing Post at the moment "Coumbe was detained in St Peter's, where he has been diagnosed with one cracked and one broken vertebra, but staff at the hospital were describing his condition on Thursday as "comfortable".

Tony Carroll, the trainer for whom he was riding at Kempton, said: "Mark seems quite upbeat and the good news is that there's apparently no lasting damage to his spine.

"He's got some bruising to his lungs and an injured arm, but the doctors say both will heal given a bit of time and, at the moment, they're monitoring him to see how long he'll need to be kept in."

Two horses died in the pile-up, which occurred at halfway in the 1m apprentice handicap that closed the Kempton card, and trainer Gay Kelleway is planning to sponsor a race to commemorate the runner she lost in the incident, her hack Arctic Desert. "

I am sure that you will join us in wishing Mark and the other Jockey a speedy recovery and our thoughts are with their family and friends.

I will of course update you with information on his progress as I get it.
1st update

Sarobar is obviously in the form of his life ( Either that or he responded to the double polo mint bribe offered if he won again when I last saw him at the stables).  He chased the leaders all the way around until about 3 out. Stable Jockey Lee Edwards playing it cool and letting the others burn themselves out first.  In the final two Lee and Sarobar drove towards the line and brought home yet another convincing win.  No doubt the handicapper will raise his handicap by 10lb or more the next time he runs after two terrific wins in a row.

Racing post said "
SAROBAR confirmed his well-being with his second win of the week. Due to go up 12lb in future handicaps, he was essentially 5lb well-in here, and he capitalized with a workmanlike victory. Well handled, he battled home in determined style and is clearly in good nick. He will, obviously, find things tougher when he runs off his new mark next time.

First of all thank you for all the good wishes  you have sent Mark Coumbe. He is making steady progress and hopes to be leaving hospital soon.  I will update as soon as I hear any more.

He's hot!  This partial extract was taken from the Daily Mail Race Mail Section on Saturday 9th August. In the Racemail tipster section under the heading The Data Bank. It gives the current top trainers over the last 14 days. To quote some of it "Who's Hot TRAINERS (last 14 days) R Guest 3 wins, PD Arcy 3 wins, ...........Sir M Prescot 5 wins,  J Lamb 3 wins, A Carroll 5 wins. "

Over the last twelve months Tony Carroll has had 51 wins and 133 places.  Again that is a remarkable achievement
for a stable that houses around 50 horses and there is still four months racing left in 2008!

I have this latest news on Mark Coumbe.

Mark was finally released from St Peter's Hospital on Saturday morning. He has been fitted with a brace which he is finding extremely uncomfortable. His partner, Nicola, said that he is allowed to take the brace off at night as long as he stays on his back, but apparently he is a very restless sleeper. Mark has been staying with family over the weekend but is due to be brought home today by Barbara Haines, courtesy of the Injured Jockeys Fund.

I will continue to post news about Mark as I get it.

Everyman ran a great race last night. From the start Luke Morris kept Everyman in 6th place and did not try to force the pace. Half a mile out they were still there in 6th. Horses were now beginning to bunch and the temptation must have been great to break away but the pair remained steady. Coming into the home straight Everyman and another horse, Circadian Rhythm, took to the middle of the course and started to leave the others behind. Everyman seemed to be enjoying himself and put on a burst of speed in the final yards. With ears pricked he crossed the finish line leaving the other horse two and a half lengths behind. A convincing win for Everyman and a double for the night for Luke Morris.

Last Thursday The Cayterers ran for the fist time under Tony Carroll as his trainer. Unfortunately he did not get off to a promising start as he was rather slow out of the gate. The Great Leighs race was a six furlong sprint and coming up to the half way mark the horses were well bunched with The Cayterers somewhere at the back. Turning into the home straight The Cayterers was still towards the rear but now on the outside of the pack. Then with the finish line in sight The Cayterers changed gears and much to the delight of the crowd, and the race commentator, he passed the lot. Storming across the line like it was the easiest thing in the world. To quote the race commentator " A shrewd bit of training!!" Racing Post Quote "THE CAYTERERS, with the blinkers he wore for the first time on his last start removed, attracted plenty of money before the race and finished strongly down the middle of the course to win on his first start for Tony Carroll. He has been tried over a variety of distances in his time but is probably at his best over sprint trips."

First of all an apology.  No reports for quite a while.  Don't worry not going to bore you with details!

I think the stables horses must be getting polo mint widrawal symptoms by now as I have not even been to the stables in the last two weeks.

Under Fire ran a cracking race on Wednesday last.  With Jemma Marshall aboard the pair led from start to almost the finish.  They set the pace throughout the whole race and were only challanged in the last furlong or so by Epiduaurian King. They alternated the  first and second positions but in the last feet, sadly, Epiduaurian King beat Under Fire across the line leaving her to claim second. Non the less this was a great effort from Under Fire and Jemma.

Racing post had this to say : "
Dual course-and-distance winner Under Fire likesto make the running and was well drawn to attack from the front. He ran a perfectly sound race." Praise indeed.

Yesterday I was driving past Millhouse but called into do a quick polo mint run, just to bring the  horses a little luck, especially Mujamead who was being loaded for his trip to Leicester as I arrived. It seems to  have worked.

Mujamead ran in the 2:50 at Leicester. The ground good to soft. The odds 16/1, possibly because he was going to run about 9lb higher than on his last win.  What a race. Mujamead with Wayne Hutchinson aboard made all and led almost all the way.  A particularly good jump at the 3rd from home helped a lot and seemed to stir him on.  Crossing the finish line in first place at just over a length in front of his nearest rival. Winning the race in style, clearly beating the favourites who ran with 9/2 and a 100/30 odds.   This horse has improved greatly over the summer, and we are hoping for great things from him. Racing Post comment
“Few got into this as MUJAMEAD, who won the selling hurdle on this card a year ago, bounced out in front and found plenty when asked to register an all-the-way success. He had been off since April and remained 9lb higher than when last winning, but has evidently improved over the summer and it will be interesting to see whether he can progress again.”

For a short while I thought Tony was going to have a double on Monday.  Jake The Snake, with Hayley Turner aboard was in Kempton for a one mile handicap race.  Looking at Jake in the parade ring he looked in fine form and Laura, the groom,  had her work cut out trying to keep Jake calm and not let him wear himself out before the race.  All was going fine until the jockeys came out to mount their horses when the lights went out, literally.  A 'technical fault' that lasted about 15 mins.  Not very fair on the horses but eventually they were off.  Hayley rode Jake well and very tactically. She tracked the leaders, not pushing Jake too hard. At the 2 furlong marker she made her move and pushed Jake to the front. The race looked in the bag but somehow on the very last stride the horse behind got a nose in front and snatched the race in the last second.  Even the race commentators were taken by surprise and it was an anxious wait for the photo but alas victory had been snatched away from Jake but it was a valiant effort by horse and rider.  Racing Post comment
“Top-weight Jake The Snake raced freely through the early stages, but came through take it up at the furlong pole and was only nabbed at the death. This was much more like it from him and he is back on a fair mark.”

Another horse that deserves a mention is a new one in the yard. Kestrel Cross.  Kestrel ran on a very damp Ludlow course. Kestrels Cross past form suggests that he is best on good ground and shorter distance. The ground at Ludlow was definitely not good, soft being the official going, and the distance was 2miles.  When I checked the odds on the course one had him going at 50/1, very tempting.  Kestrel ridden by Noel Fehily  was held up in the initial stages and coming around the final bend lagging behind towards the back of the pack.  Standing on the finish line I watched them approach.  The horses in front of Kestrel began to tire and slow. Kestrel actually speeded up.  An amazing sight.  Where it got the energy from I don’t know but it was an excellent effort.  This is a horse to keep an eye on. Noel was full of praise for the horse when he dismounted. Ok Kestrel Cross came fourth but its the way he finished that showed his future potential.  His finish style may prove an exciting thing to watch in any upcoming races, we shall have to wait and see.
Racing Post comment
Kestrel Cross, having his first start after leaving Luca Cumani, shaped with a deal of promise after being held up in the early stages. Rated in the 90s on the Flat at his best, he should find a race in due course.”

Just been watching The Cayterers running in the Class  5 handicap at Lingfield. Although stuck at the rear for most of the race, held up by a very compact wall of horses in front of him.  The Cayterers  worked remarkably to come from the very rear on the final bend to fight his way down the rail and through the pack to put up a real challenge to the leading horse.  Although he was almost there this time the race was a little too short and victory avoided his grasp. He came a very close second and no doubt his performance is improving all the time.  Perhaps one to keep an eye on in the future?

The polo mints seems to be working their magic again!  Can Can Star, in the Memorial Handicap (Class 6) (3YO plus) from Lingfield, ran a exciting race this afternoon.  With S W Kelly aboard they gave it their all.  With 1 furlong to go the leader, Lord Theo,  was some five lengths in front and his position looked unassailable.  Somehow Can Can Star caught Lord Theo and three horses in unison crossed the finish line. From my vantage point I could not tell you who had won. There was an tense wait.   After looking at the photo the Judges awarded  first place to Can Can Star.   On a personal level I am very please for both the owner and the horse, a well deserved win.  If this keeps up I will get writers cramp, but who cares! Keep the winners coming Tony.

Kinkeel was running in a Class 5 conditional Jockeys handicap chase at Towcester.  Eamon Dehashti aboard. Kinkeel was second off the line at the start and kept to the front.  Luckily he missed the several fallers behind him.  The horses plodded at a steady pace on what looked like claggy ground that drained the energy from all the runners. Coming over the last fence Kinkeel lay in third place. His ears pricked.   The finish line drew ever closer. The distance and the conditions began to tell on the front runners but Kinkeel plodded on at his usual good, steady, pace. Then it happened. From somewhere Kinkeel found that extra bit that makes all the difference.  Kinkeel over took the leaders and just managed to get his nose in front and to delightfully surprised race commentators and spectators alike came home to win.  Very good odds too.  33/1 -20/1 and finally 16/1.    I think the old boy deserves a couple of carrots for that effort, and he will get them when I go up to the stables next week. Well done Kinkeel & Eamon.
It gives me great pleasure to write this next story.  Kinkeel's won!  I have known this horse for some years now and watched him race many times. He came 3rd 7times 2nd 6 times but never a winner.  Perhaps it's his new box with a view at the yard or the double polo mints  that I gave him a couple of days ago? What ever the reason its great to see the old boy win at last.

It's certainly been an exciting weekend racing wise.  Bold Diva has just run in the 4.45 Kempton race a Handicap (Div 11)(Class 6 race) (3yo+,0-55).

It was not a very promising start as Bold Diva was hemmed in at the rear of the pack right from the start but Hayley Turner kept her cool and waited for the opportunity to present itself to come forward.  Two furlongs out and still no gap. Last furlong and all the horses began to stretch themselves, gaps appeared and Haley & Bold Diva took full advantage.  One furlong to go and Bold Diva was still far from the front.  Hayley put her hands up the horses neck and pushed Diva on.  It could not have been better timed as in the last stride Diva got her nose in front to bring home yet another win for the yard, and no doubt the delighted owners.

I need your help.  You may have noticed that when you click Next Races on the office page instead of going to the Racing Post and getting an upto date list Its now directed to At the Races.  Whilst it appears ok the list is disappointing in that it does not update itself very much.  For instance it looks like Tony Carroll has four entries when in fact Tony  has only one, the others not being finally declared etc.  So do you know of a website where Tony Carrolls runners are listed and updated quickly?  I know I can still get Tonys entries on Racing Post but I can no longer link to it directly and its a slower upload.  I have tried several betting sites and television sites with no luck, but surely someone  out there knows of a website I can link directly to?

If you know of anywhere click this line to send me an email editor@awcarroll.co.uk

Thanks in advance for your help!  Frank C Editor.
You may have noticed a changed button on the Office page.  I have reverted back to the Racing Post.  Sorry but now you have to click two buttons instead of the one to get the entries, once on this website and again when you get in to the Racing Post. But if you can put up with that at least the entries, normally, are up to date.  If anyone out there knows of a better site to link to please let me know.

Dear old Can Can Star has done it again.  Can Can Star was in the 12:30  at Lingfield a (Div I)
(Class 6) (0-60, 3yo+) 1m2f race on the all weather track.   Ridden by one of my favourite Jockeys Shane Kelly.  Shane  kept Can Can toward the rear of the pack and went with the flow.  Five furlongs out and they were sitting in the same position.  Two furlongs to go and Can Can worked his way slowly and deliberately through the throng of horses.  At just over one furlong Shane urged him on and it became a two horse race for the finish. The two stars, Siena Star and Can Can Star, fought for position but Can Can proved to be the stronger horse and crossed the line in style with a powerful finish.  An excellent run by horse and rider.  Racing Post had this to say "
CAN CAN STAR continues in fine form, travelling strongly throughout and winning a bit more comfortably than the margin would suggest. Well handicapped at present, he is worth following until beaten even if he is raised a few pounds for this stylish victory."

26 Dec 2008 1:20 MARKET RASEN Garthwest Novices´ Chase (Class 4) (0-115, 4yo+) 2m2f Soft 12 fence.

Randy Bishop started well to the rear of the bunch.  The training since his last race looks like it had installed a little more confidence  in the horse and he ran very
honestly.  Despite being held up towards the rear  Stable Jockey Lee Edwards kept his nerve and resisted the temptation to push the horse too hard, too soon.  He kept taking advantage of any gaps that appeared as other horses tired.  They did not seem to making much progress until the third from home. In fact it was not until they had cleared the last fence that RB & Lee really started to push. Lee asked and Randy Bishop gave.   In the end it was a two horse race between Guns and Butter and Randy Bishop. But Randy Bishop had the edge with, what looked to be, plenty left in the tank. Clearing the line with a definitive victory.  Congratulations to Lee Edwards & Randy Bishop, a very good race.

At the Races Quote: "
raced keenly, held up, headway approaching 3 out, went 2nd next, led last, ridden and edged left flat, kept on towards finish"
